I made this photograph in spring, looking up from the Medicine Lake valley in Jasper National Park. Snow still covered the high slopes, tracing the folds and edges of the mountains. Above the dark rock faces, the clouds held a soft, warm light.
From down in the valley, I could take in the whole sweep of the ridgeline — its sharp edges, snow-filled gullies, and the light above.

This photograph was made in a remote forest landscape on the Osa Peninsula, Costa Rica.
A small cascade flows through dense vegetation, shaped by water, stone, and time.
Nothing here seeks attention. Movement is gentle, continuous — a quiet expression of life unfolding at its own pace.
I stood in the water for an hour in the rainforest of Costa Rica’s Osa Peninsula, waiting for the light to fall just right. As I watched the cascade, I stayed alert to the animals around me.
This photograph grew out of that hour of waiting and watching.

At around six in the morning, I was walking alone through the rainforest as the forest began to wake. I stayed with a group of spider monkeys, watching as the first sunlight reached through the canopy.
For a moment, the light caught this monkey’s face, leaving much of its body and the surrounding forest in shadow. To me, its look toward the morning light held a quiet sense of hope.

I made this photograph along Highway 1, near Carmel on California’s Pacific coast. Beneath a heavy sky, waves broke against the rocks, the wind lifting spray from their crests. The colours had narrowed to slate, white and the warm brown of the sand.
There is a weight to this coast in weather like this. The sky seems to press down while the ocean rises to meet it. Among the breaking waves, the dark rocks hold their place, briefly disappearing beneath the foam before emerging again.

At first light, I stepped onto the veranda of my cabin with my camera. A troop of spider monkeys appeared in the almond tree in front of me. Among them was a mother with her infant clinging to her.
Her tail held her to the branch; her infant held on to her. Against the soft morning sky, their bodies formed a single, quiet silhouette.

I photographed this mature fallow buck in Germany during the rut. His broad antlers, now bare of velvet, stood out against the dark woodland. His body faced away from me, but his head was turned back, watching.
What draws me to this photograph is the stillness of that glance. Around him, the forest softens into muted colour and shadow. In a season of restless movement, the image holds a quiet pause.
