One June morning on Costa Rica’s Osa Peninsula, I was waiting for a tapir when I heard a band of white-nosed coatis in the trees. Among the brown animals I counted six nearly white adults. Coatis this pale are rarely documented. Locally, they are known as “spirit coatis.”
This one leaned forward on a sloping trunk, its long claws curled over the bark. What draws me back to this photograph is how much colour there is in an almost white animal: cream across the shoulders, brown along the flank, and a tail that darkens until its tip is nearly lost in the shade.
